Over the course of my time at Carleton, I’ve done a lot of work in various aspects of the digital humanities. On this site, you can find a portfolio of my work, specifically including computer science, sound design and filmmaking, and digital scholarship.

Areas of Interest

Over the course of the past few years, I’ve tried out and enjoyed a lot of different fields. I’m a Cinema and Media Studies major with a good chunk of computer science and economics under my belt, and I research digital ethics professionally. I like radio drama and sound design, digital design, interactive and non-traditional narratives, and thinking about how the tech we use affects our lives.

Common Threads

Honestly, this all plays into each other! Digital humanities as a field is proof that the divide between STEM and the arts is nowhere near as sharp as we’ve all been led to believe. In my work, this manifests as a fascination first and foremost with how we think and how we communicate what we’re thinking.

What are the affordances of communication technology? What are the drawbacks? What do we want to say, but can’t? How does the way we think influence our choices and the ways we treat each other? And how can we communicate our experiences creatively?

This site is divided into three main sections: Coding, Digital Scholarship, and Sound & Video. These are, broadly speaking, the three buckets my work falls into. But on each page you’ll see commonalities and connections, and that is by design.

Future Plans

At present, I’m looking into organization, time management and project planning. Why do people run into problems, and how can systems smooth the way? There are a lot of so-called solutions out there, but do they address people’s needs or are they a way for computer scientists to demonstrate their technical prowess? Hopefully both, but I’m still investigating.

In the future, I have several ideas for projects to complete. I’m hoping to teach myself the programming language Ruby, learn the art of digital layout, hammer out some of my game design skills, and continue my work on how to make people’s lives easier. If there’s time, I might even get to fulfill some of my more ambitious sound design projects.

Just for Fun

In my spare time, I like to edit photos, drum, design and play tabletop games, and sew. When I have the time and the opportunity, I love to get involved in theater however I can — acting, tech, stage managing, whatever. And in addition to all that, I’ve been very proud to serve Carleton’s own Science Fiction and Fantasy Alliance as an officer of the club (Vice President, then President) for the past three years.
